As the experiential education leader I have had the privilege of taking numerous students out into the bosque to conduct ecosystem monitoring. Carlos Villarreal is one of the students that I have worked with for the last two years through the BEMP (Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program). During the summer of 2014 Carlos received an internship to work with the University of New Mexico and BEMP. Carlos worked in the field and in the lab during his internship and the newsletter to the left is a picture of Carlos in the field.

The Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program (BEMP), a partnership between the UNM Department of Biology and Bosque School, is proud to have received the 2015 New Mexico Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award in Land and Ecosystem Stewardship on April 22, 2015. The purpose of these awards is to support, recognize and celebrate the hard work of New Mexicans dedicated to restoring and protecting the natural heritage and environmental health of our state. In BEMP, K-12 and UNM students conduct hands-on science to monitor the long-term health of the riparian ecosystem along the Rio Grande with the long-term goal of informing public policy.
